Special Education, in contrast to general education, is a process of imparting education to children with special needs. It requires systematic interventions right from planning to monitoring phase. Special challenges to learning include visual & hearing impairments, slow & difficult learning processes and physical & mental handicaps. The learning ability of students with special needs can be enhanced through provision of additional educational services, use of technology, specialized teaching aids, accessible infrastructure and psycho-medical services.
Special Education Department, Government of the Punjab, is providing a range of facilities to the special children of school going age through a network of 292 institutions. Apart from schools and vocational training centers, the Department also offers facilities for printing of Braille books, pre-service teachers training leading to B.Ed. and M.Ed. in Special Education, in-service teachers training for teachers of special education, screening services for students in general education institutions, provision of special aids like cochlear implants, and inclusive education through mainstreaming of special children with mild disabilities into the general education schools.
To realize the immense challenges of bringing all children with special needs into schools, Department intends to adopt a three pronged strategy of inclusion, mainstreaming and segregation to empower children with special needs for meaningful and independent living.
